In the pages of Thor, a perilous new threat that’s unlike any the Marvel Universe has ever faced before, manifested itself in the form of the Black Winter. It all began when a maimed Galactus crashed onto Asgard, warning that this Star Plague was coming to destroy everything and everyone.

The Black Winter is a multiverse cosmic entity that achieves a comparable objective to Galactus on a far bigger scale. Rather than simply devouring planets, it consumes whole universes.

History of The Black Winter

As Galactus explained it, the Black Winter is the entity that killed the universe that preceded the Marvel Universe, the one that Galactus came from when he was still just a man named Galan. In previous issues, this evil, sentient storm destroyed other universes, and Galactus’ warning showed it had now set its sights on the reality of the main Marvel Universe.

The Black Winter consumed the sixth version of the cosmos, leaving only a lone survivor – Galan of Taa, who it selected as its Herald. Known vaguely to the Asgardians as the Fimbulwinter, its coming is prophesized to signal the beginning of Ragnarok.

Pursuing to take Galactus back into its service, the Black Winter intruded into the Prime Marvel Universe and assaulted him taking on the form of Thor Odinson. Galactus managed to flee, even though severely injured, and subsequently crash-landed in Asgard; where some of its dark frost afflicted Yggdrasill, causing the World Tree to gradually rot and die.

While Galactus marked Thor Odinson as his latest Herald and began devouring five specific planets that would in theory give him the ability to oppose it, the Black Winter assaulted an different universe and was faced by its league of heroes. After looking in its eyes, the league of heroes saw the face of the one who was fated to kill them, and called out to their gods for assistance. The Black Winter then destroyed that universe, taking the form of the cosmic hand that had originally created it.

Going back to the Prime Marvel Universe, the Black Winter easily defeated Galactus and Thor. Captivated by Thor’s many brushes with death, the Black Winter set him against manifestations of his greatest foes and mockingly informed him of what was supposed to be his true end; noting that someone or something was worming their way through time to derail destiny. Thor used a God-Blast to escape, prompting the Black Winter to again assume the form of a dark version of the Herald of Thunder before assuring him it had no intention of destroying his universe, ominously adding that much darker threats than it were coming. When asked what it actually wanted, the Black Winter revealed that Galactus had been lying to Thor and was actually its Herald, and that it had come to reclaim him.

Angry at this revelation, Thor exhausted Galactus of all of his power, leaving him a desiccated husk. When the Black Winter tried to take him, Thor refused and used Galactus’ dying body as a bomb to wipe out the Black Winter. A single snowflake survived, offering to show Thor a vision of his end – a world in which Thanos had stolen Mjolnir and imbued it with the Infinity Stones, commanding an army of zombified heroes – before Thor crushed it to dust.

Black Winter Powers and Abilities

The Black Winter is able to generate frost and snow made up of eldritch darkness that disintegrates whatever it comes into contact with. As with Galactus, it appears differently to each person that sees it, usually taking on the form of the person or being fated to bring about the onlooker’s demise, though it is capable of changing form at-will.
